Refik Anadol (b. 1985, Istanbul, Turkey) is a media artist, director and pioneer in the aesthetics of data and machine intelligence. His body of work locates creativity at the intersection of humans and machines. In taking the data that flows around us as the primary material and the neural network of a computerized mind as a collaborator, Anadol paints with a thinking brush, offering us radical visualizations of our digitized memories and expanding the possibilities of architecture, narrative, and the body in motion. Anadol’s site-specific AI data sculptures, live audio/visual performances, and immersive installations take many forms, while encouraging us to rethink our engagement with the physical world, its temporal and spatial dimensions, and the creative potential of machines.

Machine Hallucinations — Space : Mars / Still #4/96

This first immersive NFT art work based on an AI cinema experience in which the past and the future of space exploration are intertwined, was born from a complex narrative of spatio-temporal re-orientation. The work is a 3-chapter, 15-minute multidimensional cinema in metaverse that is tokenized in the form of VR and minted for collectors who would like to rebuild the experience in an architectural space where they can step into the mind of a machine and speculate an alternative perception of space. In order to attain this complex spatial structure visually, the experience is separated into three chapters, each focusing on vast datasets collected from the visual memories of the universe capture by the International Space Station and the Hubble and MRO telescopes.

Regardless of the source of the data they are based on, one of the fundamental questions that Refik Anadol’s body of work has been raising for more than ten years is the possibility of establishing relationships with memories, information, archives and histories – all of which he calls “the heritage of humanity.” His vision of the relationship between artificial intelligence, big data, and art is as follows: “With so many tools at our disposal, from artificial intelligence to machine learning, from the latest data visualization techniques to artistic creativity, it is both a responsibility and an unlimited trigger of imagination to preserve the data on space-machine-human relations as much as possible and carry it into the future.”

Central to the artwork was the ingestion of vast amounts of space-related digital data, similar to the radical and fully immersive data visualizations of digitized collective memories that Anadol and his Studio have accomplished in the last decade.

Machine Hallucinations – Space : Metaverse

The 21st century is the first golden age of space exploration and of artificial intelligence. In addition to viewing space exploration archives through the lens of artificial intelligence, one of the goals of Machine Hallucinations : Earth is to address the idea of looking at the Earth “from outer space.” In this way, it suggests a particular aesthetic of infinity by combining the boundlessness of space with the endless permutations of machine intelligence. In this work that never repeats itself, a real-time generative artwork, custom AI model trained by half million satellite images of Earth and processed real-time by the Studio’s signature fluid dynamics algorithm will be infinitely dreaming about the Earth’s surface. The artist’s exploration of AI data pigmentation and light through fluid solver algorithms accelerated by GPU computation and real-time ray-traced lighting manifests this inspiration by showcasing the most innovative methods available to AI-based media artists.

If a space telescope were able to hallucinate landscapes of a planet after collecting 12 TB of visual memories of Mars, what would those hallucinations look like? This real-time generative AI painting is a latent walk-through of the machine’s Mars data universe as it endlessly generates hallucinatory landscapes. The ever-expanding data universe of hallucinations not only represents the interpolation and synthesis of photographic Mars archives, but also becomes a cosmos in which dreams are the main currency of artistic creativity. Such machine-generated hallucinations allude to a connection with the vast cosmos and include visuals that trigger a sense of belonging to the Earth and to our immediate environments. Machine Hallucinations: Mars (Infinite AI Data Painting)

This real-time generative AI data painting uses GAN algorithm model to transform visual archives recorded by the Hubble telescope into generative data pigments that are constantly changing, just like the visual archive of space is constantly growing. Hubble is one of NASA’s most successful and long-lasting science missions. It has beamed hundreds of thousands of images back to Earth, shedding light on many of the great mysteries of astronomy. Among its many discoveries, Hubble has revealed the age of the universe to be about 13.8 billion years, much more accurate than the old range of anywhere from 10 to 20 billion years. Hubble played a key role in the discovery of dark energy, a mysterious force that causes the expansion of the universe to accelerate. This transformation is both a work of sensational art to be experienced virtually and an interpretation that encourages viewers to consider the relationship between space, art, technology, and artificial intelligence.

Machine Hallucinations: Galaxy (Infinite AI Data Painting)

For this AI data painting, Anadol was inspired by the famous astrophysicist Carl Sagan. In 1980, in an episode of his TV show Cosmos, Sagan said, “Imagination will often carry us to worlds that never were. But without it we go nowhere.” Forty-one years after Sagan’s statement, Anadol presents a “machine hallucination” that connects photographic astronomic data with AI technology and new media art, imagining a visualized data universe as a first step to reach the Earth’s unseen dimensions. This universe exhibits multiple flow of networks between data points made up of Earth’s and other celestial objects’ topologies, giving us a glimpse into the latent landscapes of our planet hallucinated by the mind of a machine.

This AI data painting is based on a raw dataset of millions of photographs captured by Mars Reconnaissance Orbiter (MRO) telescope that can be found in the public archives. In order to process such vast data, a custom algorithm was created and programmed to “hallucinate” synthetic landscapes of the Martian surface, triggering our imagination about a place that is not yet familiar, but we continually set out to explore and understand.

Hubble has shown scientists galaxies in all stages of evolution, including galaxies that were around when the universe was still young, helping them understand how galaxies form. This piece pays homage to such a long journey of significant discoveries that Hubble accomplished and explores how knowledge can be experienced spatially and dynamically. Fluid dynamics has been a source of artistic inspiration for Anadol since the inception of Machine Hallucinations.

Machine Hallucinations – Space | Chapter III: Galaxy (Generative AI Data Painting)

Synthetic Mars Terrain provides a unique type of cognitive cartography using a GAN neural network trained on 1.2 millions of photos that the MRO telescope captures of the surface of Mars. HiRISE (High Resolution Imaging Science Experiment) is the most powerful camera ever sent to another planet, one of six instruments onboard the Mars Reconnaissance Orbiter. It arrived at Mars in 2006 and has been imaging ever since. The MRO camera’s high-resolution capability (imaging up to 30 centimeters per pixel) remains unprecedented for any existing orbiter in the study of the planet, as well as being an indispensable instrument for helping to select landing sites for robotic and future human exploration. The changing projection-mapped virtual texture of the data sculpture is a virtual map on which the planet's possible futures and hidden histories are revealed.
